WiMAX Con
Los Angeles, California
October 2004
WiMAX, the wireless broadband access interface for metropolitan area networks is getting similar hype to what WiFi got a couple of years ago. This WiMAX conference was one day of a multi-day IP telephony conference. The highlights included:
- Several broadband wireless access(BWA) equipment vendors exhibiting which took a small corner of the show floor
- Several BWA equipment vendors, Intel, and a few others made upbeat presentations
- Watch out for the myth of WiMAX delivering wireless data at 70Mbps for up to 30 miles in non-line of sight conditions. You choose one of those attributes and trade off on the others.
- Another WiMAX myth: WiMAX is being deployed in different parts of the world. Some even call it pre-standard WiMAX. The fact is WiMAX certified products will not be out until 3Q 2004. The certification lab, which will test for WiMAX compliance and interoperability, plans to start testing the equipment in Q1 2005.
