Panel Chair: Telemedicine - Mobile Technologies Bring Patients and Healthcare Providers Together
You have probably heard that US healthcare costs in 2007 were around $2.2 trillion and growing. By comparison, the global telecom revenues, wireless and wireline combined, totaled an estimated $1.65 trillion in the same year. That means we spent 33% more in the US caring for the sick than the entire world spent on telecommunications.JFK once said: "In a crisis, be aware of the danger - but recognize the opportunity." Advancements in various parts of wireless from devices to networks to applications can help reduce the healthcare costs. From mobile health monitoring designed to promote health in those with chronic diseases, to grass-roots mass market education on healthy lifestyle choices, wireless is enabling healthcare consumers (patients, nurses, emergency responders) to improve their individualized Health Care services.

Coverage at EETimes.com article Carriers: Let many mobiles multiply:
"In their search for growth, the service providers are essentially co-opting the ubiquitous computing vision promoted in the late 1980's by Mark Weiser of Xerox PARC, said Azita Arvani, president of Arvani Group, a wireless consulting firm and a former Xerox employee. But there are limits to the new openness.
For example, only one cellphone is among the group of systems going through the new Verizon process, according Arvani. "They are looking for things that are not directly competitive for them," she said."
