Kimi K3 and China's Expanding AI Stack

A Chinese AI model just made the U.S. AI lead feel a lot less comfortable.

Yesterday, I joined FOX 5 DC's Live Zone with Guy Lambert to discuss Kimi K3, the new model from China's Moonshot AI.

For those who have not been following it closely: Kimi K3 is a roughly 3-trillion-parameter-class model that has shown near-frontier performance, promised an open-weight release, and appears to offer that capability at a significantly lower cost. That last point matters.

Because when near-frontier AI becomes cheaper and more accessible, the question shifts from: Who has the best model? to Who can deploy AI broadly, quickly, and at scale?

A few weeks ago, I was in Shanghai for MWC Shanghai, where I saw firsthand how quickly China is moving across embodied AI, robotics, infrastructure, and industrial deployment.

China is not competing only on AI models. It is competing across the entire stack: AI models. Hardware. Robotics. Supply chains. Manufacturing scale.

Kimi K3 is one visible piece of that much larger strategy.

The United States still has extraordinary AI strengths: world-class research, leading frontier labs, deep capital markets, entrepreneurial energy, and an unmatched ecosystem of builders. But leadership is not a birthright. It has to be earned continuously.

The answer to China's progress is neither panic nor denial. It is faster American innovation plus serious international guardrails for the AI risks no country can manage alone.

The AI race is no longer just about who has the best model. It is about who can turn AI into capability, infrastructure, productivity, and strategic advantage. That is the conversation we should be having.
